Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve (TATR), often referred to as the “Jewel of Vidarbha,” continues to captivate wildlife enthusiasts with its dynamic tiger population and evolving conservation efforts. As of August 2025, several notable events have highlighted the resilience of its majestic tigers and the challenges they face.

Chhota Matka (T-126) Holds His Ground

After a territorial conflict with T-158 in May 2025, male tiger T-126, also referred to as Chhota Matka, has been closely monitored. T-126 suffered a serious injury to his right forelimb, while T-158 passed away from his wounds. In the Khadsangi buffer zone, this impairment has resulted in several cattle kills; incidents were reported on multiple days of July & some in August. In accordance with the Wildlife Protection Act of 1972, forest officials have put into effect a thorough action plan that includes veterinary treatment, tracking using GIS, and timely compensation to impacted villagers.

Tiger Sightings During Monsoon Season

Despite the monsoon season, which typically sees a decline in tiger sightings, Tadoba’s buffer zones continue to offer opportunities for wildlife enthusiasts. Areas like Kolara, Alizanza, and Belara remain accessible, providing glimpses of the reserve’s rich biodiversity.

Conservation Efforts and Challenges

While the tiger population in Tadoba is thriving, the region faces challenges related to human-wildlife conflict. Between January and July 2025, predator attacks in Chandrapur district resulted in 25 deaths and 108 injuries. In response, the Maharashtra government has installed AI-powered cameras, deployed Quick Response Teams, and provided financial compensation to victims. However, some local leaders argue that these measures have been insufficient and have called for more decisive actions.
